Prerequisites: Admission to the esthetics program and Corequisites for part- and full-time students: CO 121 and CO 122

This course provides class instruction in skin care. Topics include sanitation, skin sciences, waxing, skin treatments, makeup, business practices and state law. This class meets 105 lecture hours of the 1,000 contact hours required by the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology. Enrollment in this course requires that you be current in payment of a professional liability fee of $16.00. This fee is required once per calendar year based on enrollment in selected courses and must be in place prior to the start of classes. CO 121   Esthetics Lab (6 Hours)

Prerequisites: Selective admission approval and Corequisites for part- and full-time students: CO 120 and CO 122

This course provides skill instruction of skin care in a lab setting. Topics include sanitation, skin sciences, waxing, skin treatments, makeup, business practices and state law. This class meets 135 hours of instructional laboratory. Enrollment in this course requires that you be current in payment of a professional liability fee of $16.00. CO 122   Esthetics Clinical (2 Hours)

Prerequisites: Selective admission approval and Corequisites for part- and full-time students: CO 120 and CO 121

This course provides skill instruction and practical application of skin care in a clinical setting. Topics include sanitation, skin sciences, waxing, skin treatments, makeup, business practices and state law. This class meets 64 clinical hours. Enrollment in this course requires that you be current in payment of a professional liability fee of $16.00. This fee is required once per calendar year based on enrollment in selected courses and must be in place prior to the start of classes. CO 127   Intermediate Esthetics (7 Hours)

Description:

This course provides skill instruction of skin care in a lab setting. Topics include sanitation, skin sciences, waxing, skin treatments, makeup, business practices and state law. This class meets 53 laboratory hours of the 1,000 contact hours required by the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology. Enrollment in this course requires that you be current in payment of a professional liability fee of $16.00. This fee is required once per calendar year based on enrollment in selected courses and must be in place prior to the start of classes. Students will be notified via their JCCC student email account if they are required to pay a $16 fee.

Objectives

  5. Apply math and writing concepts to the practice of esthetics. 

Content Outline and Competencies:

I. Sanitation
   A. Follow Kansas Board of Cosmetology state law regulations.
   B. Demonstrate how to prevent the spread of bacteria.
   C. Practice methods of sterilization and sanitation employed in the
salon.

II. Advanced Skin Treatments
   A. Demonstrate how to use machines and other apparatus for advanced
professional skin care, including:
      1. Body Treatments
      2. Facial Treatments
   B. Perform the various face and body treatments used in the skin care
center and know their specific contraindications.
   C. Identify the difference between various advanced massage techniques
and their specific contraindications.
   D. Identify and discuss with your client the advanced types of facial
and body treatments available.
   E. Recognize any evidence of medical procedures related to esthetics
and implications to procedure.

III. Career Planning
   A. Demonstrate an understanding of day spa.
   B. Perform skills necessary to properly manage clients and facilities.

IV. Business Practices
   A. Demonstrate positive human relations.
   B. Demonstrate a professional attitude and image in accordance with

   A. Demonstrate preparation of treatment rooms and client draping.
   B. Perform professional client consultation.
   C. Identify techniques necessary to conduct a proper skin analysis for
different skin types and customize treatments for each.
   D. Identify characteristics of skin:
      1. Degrees of aging
      2. Fitzpatrick types
      3. Skin types
   E. Identify skin conditions, lesions, and the difference between
diseases and disorders utilizing advanced skin analysis equipment.
   F. Assess muscular structures, functions, and various nerves that are
affected during facial treatments.
   G. Perform customized exfoliation techniques, such as:
      1. Physical
      2. Chemical
      3. Mechanical
   H. Perform various massage movements, including:
      1. Effleurage
      2. Petrissage
      3. Friction
      4. Tapotement
      5. Vibration
   I. Perform Manual Lymphatic Drainage.
   J. Recommend alternatives to European Massage Treatments, such as
acupressure.
   K. Demonstrate techniques necessary to prepare and perform body
treatments.
      1. Conduct proper set-up.
      2. Use appropriate draping techniques for various treatments.
      3. Properly use Reflexology in body treatments.
   L. Use safety precautions when performing electrical treatments.
      1. Select the appropriate electrical current.
      2. Apply proper use of equipment, including:

         c. Microstimulator (suction machine)
         d. Rotary Brush

   A. Determine proper temporary hair removal methods, including:

IV. Makeup
   A. Analyze a client's facial shape and features.

   C. Determine warm and cool colors.
   D. Demonstrate methods of makeup applications:
      1. Client makeup Lessons
      2. Daytime makeup application
      3. Special Occasion makeup application
      4. Corrective or Camouflage makeup application
      5. Video or Photography makeup application
   E. Apply Lash and Brow Tinting.
