ART 291   Independent Study* (1-7 Hour)

Prerequisites : 2.0 GPA minimum and department approval.

Independent study is a directed, structured learning experience offered as an extension of the regular curriculum. It is intended to allow individual students to broaden their comprehension of the principles of and competencies associated with the discipline or program. Its purpose is to supplement existing courses with individualized, in-depth learning experiences. Such learning experiences may be undertaken independent of the traditional classroom setting, but will be appropriately directed and supervised by regular instructional staff. Total contact hours vary based on the learning experience.

Degree art@ksu.edu Academic Year 2025-2026 Program Description The Associate of Arts, AA at JCCC is a general transfer degree and partners well with the first two years of most bachelor degree programs. Students pursuing the AA may select courses that satisfy both the AA degree requirements and lower division requirements for a bachelor’s degree at four-year institutions. The elective hours within the AA allow students to complete additional general education and lower division courses required for specific majors. The AA degree requires completion of 60 credit hours. Meeting with a JCCC counselor is strongly recommended for selection of appropriate courses.   Admission Requirements The BFA in Art is a 4-year, 120-credit hour program with concentrations possible in Studio Art or Visual Communication Design. VCD curriculum is a set 3-year curriculum, after Portfolio Review, no matter how many credits already taken (gen ed/art elect/art hist) . Students must complete the Department of Art Foundation Core (ART 174, ART 180, ART 194, ART 200) or equivalent courses to go through the Portfolio process for either VCD or Studio Art concentration. Exceptions may be made on an individual basis. Contact K-State Art Advisor for questions. Students must maintain an overall 2.0 GPA in order to graduate with a BFA degree. This professional degree is also considered as appropriate preparation for the Master of Fine Arts degree. Upon completion of the Department of Art Foundation Core, students must pass ART 205: Portfolio Review. This is comprised of a formal evaluation of the completed course work which occurs during the Spring semester in which the foundation courses (13 hours) are completed. Course work must meet faculty approval, and upon passing the portfolio review, students may begin BFA study in the chosen area of concentration. Students transferring to KSU, that complete the General Education requirements required for the Associate of Arts (AA) , Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree from JCCC will be considered to have satisfied KSU’s core general education curriculum. Students who transfer to KSU, without completing the General Education requirements required for the Associate of Arts (AA) , Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree will have courses evaluated on a course-by-course basis toward meeting KSU requirements.
