Transfer Admission Procedures/Qualifications

Application:

• Submit online applications to KU Admissions.

• $40 nonrefundable application fee. Students may qualify for a need-based or military fee waiver.

• Request official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities be sent directly to the University of Kansas Office of Admissions.

• Application deadline for admission to the University is two weeks prior to the start of the application term. Visit the Major Specific Requirements for eligibility requirements and admission deadlines for the professional schools at KU. 

Student Seeking Readmission:

• Any student who attended KU before, has earned a grade of A, B, C, D, F, W, WG, I, S or U in at least 1 hour of credit and it has been one semester or longer since last attending KU must apply for readmission meeting the appropriate deadline.

• Transfer students who applied to KU may update the term of application for up to one year from original application term. If it has been more than one year, students must submit a new application. 

International Students:

• Must apply using international student application and meet appropriate deadlines depending on school. 

Transfer Qualifications:

• At KU our individual review process looks at each applicant individually and we encourage all applicants to apply.

• To receive assured admission for the University of Kansas as a transfer student, you must have completed at least 24 transferable graded credit hours from an accredited institution with a minimum transferable cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application.

• Transfer students will be evaluated for admission solely on college grades after completing 24 transferable graded credit hours of postsecondary work, not including courses in progress. Students with fewer than 24 transferable credit hours must also meet the requirements for freshman assured admission and achieve a transferable college GPA of 2.5

• For admission purposes, KU will calculate a GPA based on the transferable coursework completed following the issuing institutions repeat policy. • Admission to the professional schools (Architecture & Design, Business, Education and Human Sciences, Engineering, Health Professions, Music, Journalism and Mass Communications, Nursing, Pharmacy, Professional Studies, School of the Arts and Social Welfare) is selective. ACT/SAT Scores:

• KU does not require ACT or SAT scores for general admission but encourages the submission of scores.  They do not negatively impact admission decisions. Test scores may be used for placement into Math and English courses. 

Transcript Evaluations:

• Transfer students who have been admitted to KU will have credit evaluated from official transcripts. Transfer course equivalencies can be viewed on CredTran, the KU Transfer Equivalency System and through the student’s myKU portal.

• Campus visits are available upon request by calling (785) 864-3911 or by registering online. 

Tuition/Fees/Expenses for the 2025-26 Academic Year

Tuition and Fees for Transfer Students:

• Kansas Resident: $374.49/credit hour pending approval by Kansas Board of Regents.

• Non-Resident:  $1000.77/credit hour pending approval by Kansas Board of Regents.

• Some KU programs also charge additional course fees. 

Required Campus Fees:

• $1,071/year (based on enrollment of 6 or more credit hours) pending approval by Kansas Board of Regents. 

Room & Board:

• On-campus: $5,288-12,912 (estimated) per year.

• Off-campus: Varies. Information for off-campus living is available through the KU housing office or classified sections of the Daily Kansan.

Books:

• $1,224 (approximately) per year. 

Additional Expenses:

• Miscellaneous living expenses for travel, social activities, sports tickets, parking permit, extra meals, etc., vary depending on the student.

Financial Aid/Scholarships for the 2025-26 Academic Year

Mount Oread Scholarship: 3.5 cumulative GPA; $6,000 ($2,000/YR)

Golden Valley Scholarship: 3.25 cumulative GPA; $3,750 ($1,250/YR)

Note:  Renewal Criteria: Up to 6 semesters (or earned Bachelor’s Degree), 3.0 GPA and full-time enrollment (12 hour/semester) 

PHI THETA KAPPA: 3.5 cumulative GPA; $500 (NON-RENEWABLE)

Eligibility for these Automatic Scholarships:

• Submit a complete admission application (by Aug. 1 for fall semesters and Dec. 1 for spring semesters).

• Students who start in the summer will receive their scholarship in the fall.

• Submit an official transcript (by Aug. 15 for summer and fall semesters or by Jan. 6 for spring semesters)

• Have completed 24 transferable college credit hours

• Not have earned a bachelor's degree previously.

• Your Phi Theta Kappa advisor must submit a PTK Membership Verification Form by Aug. 15 for the fall semester or Jan. 6 for the spring semester (if seeking the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship)

• Applicants who have previously attended KU as a degree seeking student are not eligible for transfer scholarships.

Transfer Credit/Grading Policies

Application of Credit:

• At least 30 hours of upper-division course work must be completed at the University of Kansas. Schools of Business and Education have additional credit hour requirements.

• Application of transfer credit toward degree requirements is determined by each school or department. 

GPA Calculation:

• Calculation of the KU Overall GPA for bachelor’s degree includes only grades from those courses taken at KU.

• GPA’s from all previous course work completed at other colleges will be used to make an admission decision and may be used by the professional schools or certain programs at KU. 

Pass/Fail:

• Pass/Fail (credit/no credit) policy is determined by the individual schools. 

• Some schools, scholarship committees, and honorary societies do not look favorably on ungraded course work. 

Repeat Policy:

• KU will honor the course repeat policy in effect at the institution issuing the transcript.

"D" Grades:

• Transfer credit for courses in which a grade of D+ and below was earned will not be applied toward a degree. If the coursework is otherwise transferable, grades of D+ and below are used to calculate the cumulative transfer GPA. Visit KU transfer coursework for detailed information. 

Time Limit on Credit:

• Transfer credit does not expire. 

Credit for Prior Learning and Exemptions:

• Visit KU Credit for Prior Learning for ACT/SAT information and KU’s awards for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and College Level Examination Program (CLEP).
