Program Description
- The bachelor’s degree in elementary education teacher education at the University of Kansas School of Education and Human Sciences prepares individuals to teach children in Pre-K through 6th grade.
- The systemwide transfer degree provides a pathway from any Kansas public community college offering the degree to any Kansas public university for individuals desiring to become licensed as a PK6 elementary teacher. The pathway identifies courses/credit hours to be taken at the community college level and reflect the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) General Education framework “buckets” and recommended education coursework.
- JCCC offers an Associate of Arts in Elementary Education degree.
- These courses/credit hours transfer to any KBOR university as the first sixty hours toward a 120-hour PK-6 Elementary Education program degree. The remaining sixty hours at KBOR universities are the required courses to complete the PK-6 Elementary Education degree.
Admission Requirements
- Students can be admitted into teacher education programs as transfer students if they are admitted to KU, declare a teacher education program as their major, and meet the following criteria:
- A KU + Transfer Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
- Students must meet requirements to begin and progress through professional coursework blocks. Visit KU's Transition Points #1-#4 to learn more about the professional transition block requirements.
- A grade lower than a “C-” is not acceptable in any teacher education course. Some programs may have additional minimum grade point requirements for specific classes. Consult the School of Education & Human Sciences for details.
- A maximum of 75 hours may be transferred to KU from community colleges. Students should be aware that 45 junior/senior credit hours are required for completion of the bachelor’s degree; 30 of those hours must be at KU; and community college courses do not transfer as junior/senior hours.
- Only 6 hours of Credit/No Credit is allowed for general education courses. A student cannot take a class Credit/No Credit for any major requirement.
- Minimum total hours for graduation is 120.
