Program Description

The 120 credit hour Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education is designed for students who wish to become elementary teachers in grades 1-6. Teacher candidates in the program will learn the content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and professional attitudes and dispositions to be outstanding elementary teachers. Candidates will complete field-based assignments and placements to provide authentic experiences necessary for the profession. 

The 120 credit hour Bachelor of Science degree in Middle School Education with concentrations in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies is designed for students who wish to become middle school (grades 5-9) teachers. Teacher candidates in the program will learn the content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and professional attitudes and dispositions to be outstanding middle school teachers. Candidates will complete field-based assignments and placements to provide authentic experiences necessary for the profession.

Admission Requirements

All students must apply for admission to the university. Applicants for the Education major will be reviewed on factors such as cumulative college GPA, number of credit hours taken at Avila, on campus interview, and patterns and trends in academic history indicating potential for success.  

A minimum of 120 hours is required for the degree; at least 64 semester hours must be completed at four-year institutions. The final thirty (30) hours must be completed at Avila University. A minimum GPA of 2.0, “C” is required for graduation in all work attempted, including transfer credits. At least 12 upper-division hours in the major must be completed at Avila. All upper-division courses in the major must have a minimum grade of “C”. 

Transfer students coming to Avila with an Associate of Arts (AA), a Bachelor’s degree, or higher degree from an institution accredited by accreditors recognized by both the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the US Department of Education (USDE), or regional accrediting bodies, will be considered to have completed all Skills and Liberal Arts level requirements in the Core Curriculum but are still required to complete the following Core Component Designations:

⸰ IS-Interdisciplinary Studies (3 credit hours)

⸰ GS-Global Studies or CE-Community Engagement (3 credit hours) The CE Course requirement can be met with the ED 495 Final Clinical Experience.

⸰ Any core courses specifically required as part of the general education curriculum for the student’s major not previously completed

Students completing a degree in education will meet the 6 hours required in Global Studies or Community Engagement core designation in ED 495 at Avila.
