Program Description

**Students who meet the admissions criteria and complete the coursework outlined below in their first year at JCCC will be eligible to transfer to KU and remain on track to graduate in 5 years for the M. Arch degree.**

The Associate of Arts, AA at JCCC is a general transfer degree and partners well with the first two years of most bachelor degree programs. Students pursuing the AA may select courses that satisfy both the AA degree requirements and lower division requirements for a bachelor’s degree at four-year institutions. The elective hours within the AA allow students to complete additional general education and lower division courses required for specific majors. The AA degree requires completion of 60 credit hours.  Contact Jonathan Miller, JCCC Architecture Chair & Professor, with any questions.

Admission Requirements

The Architecture Program at JCCC has worked in close cooperation with the University of Kansas, School of Architecture & Design, to develop a direct transfer curriculum that meets the goals of the students and the University. Students who meet the admissions criteria and complete the coursework outlined below in their first year at JCCC will be eligible to transfer to KU and remain on track to graduate in 5 years.

  • The Master of Architecture degree (180 credit hours) is designed to be completed in five years, with one summer of academic work (study abroad or an internship with a firm following the fourth year of study). Students are in Undergraduate Status for enrollment first 4 years and begin Graduate Status enrollment the final year of this program.
  • The Master of Architecture is an NAAB-accredited professional degree program and is an essential aspect of preparing for the professional practice of architecture. Graduates of this program who complete a recognized internship program (such as the Architectural Experience Program) and successfully complete the Architectural Registration Examination are able to become licensed architects.
  • To apply, transfer students must submit application for admission to the KU School of Architecture and Design by October 1 for spring admission, or by February 1 for summer or fall admission. Application materials should be submitted far in advance to ensure they are received by the deadline.
  • Transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher from all college or university coursework, including KU.  Applicants must have grades of “C” or better in all non-studio-based courses with grades of “B” or better in studio-based courses.  Credit/no credit is acceptable for general education courses, but not for ARCH courses. Placement is also based on available space. '
  • Please send your official transcript to KU: Office of Admissions, Attn: Application Processing, 1502 Building, 1502 Iowa Street, Lawrence, KS 66045, or electronically through an authorized transcript vendor to emprocessing@ku.edu.
  • Students transferring to KU, that complete the General Education requirements required for the Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree from JCCC will be considered to have satisfied KU’s Core 34 general education curriculum.
  • Students who transfer to KU, without completing the General Education requirements required for the Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree will have courses evaluated on a course-by-course basis toward meeting KU requirements. To learn more about courses that satisfy KU Core 34 Requirements and KU CredTran.
  • Visit the KU Core 34 General Education guide for JCCC equivalents.
  • The curriculum below meets the requirement for the one-year JCCC Architecture transfer program, to the 5-year Master of Architecture degree at the KU School of Architecture, Design & Planning. This list is a suggested sequence of courses. These courses may be taken at any time; however, students should complete these courses before transferring to KU Architecture to stay on track with the first-year program.
