FMS 274   Fundamentals of Expanded Media (3 Hours)

This is an introductory course in Expanded Media. This course will cover various areas of foundational expanded media techniques, materials, and processes including video, sound, animation, performance, projections and installation. The goal of this course is to develop ideas and strategies of how to engage an expanded practice, meaning an artistic practice that takes place across materials and/or disciplinary boundaries based on the needs of the work and the concepts behind the work. Over the course, we will explore the early history of the projected image, the origin of video installations, and our current engagement with new forms of interactive and immersive environments. We will explore the potential of breaking the form of video media, whether projected or on screens, and going beyond the form of the “flat rectangle.” This course integrates both theory and practice. Students will engage in readings and discussions as well as the production of their own expanded media projects.
